Three-body Sextant Piloting

The procedure is to determine three well-known landmarks confirmed by a chart that are less than 90 degrees apart in bearing. A benefit is this fix is accurate and does not rely on a compass. It is good from stationary positions or to see if you have dragged your anchor.
Steps:
- Find three points on the horizon confirmed by a chart. From left to right points A, B, and C.
- Take angles AB and BC from your boat with a sextant or kamal.
- Draw a line from B to C on the chart.
- Construct angle CBR on the chart = 90 - angle BC
- Construct angle BCQ on the chart = 90 - angle BC
- From the intersection of these lines, this equals S.
- From this intersection draw circle with a radius SC on the chart.
- The vessel is somewhere on that circle.
- Construct angle BAR = 90 - angle AB
- Construct angle ABQ = 90 - angle AB
- From the intersection of these lines, this equals S.
- From this intersection draw circle with a radius SB
- Where the circles intersect is your fix.
