Rule 8 – Action To Avoid Collision
Any action taken to avoid collision shall, if the circumstances of the case admit, be positive, made in ample time and with due regard to the observance of good seamanship.
- If safe to do so, (if the circumstances of the case admit) any alteration of course or speed to avoid collision will be substantial enough for others to see.
- Smaller adjustments afterward should be avoided to avoid confusion.
- Altering course may be the most effective solution against collision given:
- Enough room to maneuver
- Is made in time
- Is substantial
- Does not result in another collision risk
- Collision avoidance equals passing at a safe distance with the situation carefully monitored until the vessels are safely past and clear.
- Slow or reverse speed to give more time to assess the situation or avoid a collision.
- A vessel not required to get in the way of another shall stay clear to allow for safe passage.
- Even a vessel that everyone else should be out of the way for is still bound to take appropriate action to avoid a collision.
